This is a way that will ensure that every student has something in common. Each skill is unique in its way and how it helps students. It is essential in the age of the internet.
21st-century skills comprise of skills and abilities which are identified to be necessary for an individual's success in 21st-century society and workplace. These are the skills which every educator, business leader, academic or any agency would be looking for in an individual. These skills are a part of the growing international movement requiring students to master and prepare for the success in a rapidly changing digital society. These are skills and not primarily content knowledge-based so an individual will learn them as he works on them. Now over a decade, where we see a shift from 20th century to 21st century, we notice that the society at that time is very different from the society now. It has undergone an accelerating pace of change both technologically and economically. The companies want students who have a lot of qualities. Students are ought to be prepared for that kind of work. They ought to be flexible and adaptable in different fields for different roles. Now let's talk about the three basic categories in which 21st Century skill is divided and how these three categories are divided further. The three categories are: -
1. Learning Skills: These skills teach students about the mental process that are required to think, adapt and improve your modern work environment near you.
This category includes the Four C's which are by far the most popular and followed skills. These are the universal skills which are even taught and needed for many other careers, so people know about them. These are:
- Critical Thinking i.e. finding solutions to the problems.
- Creativity i.e. Thinking uniquely, something outside the box.
- Collaboration i.e. Working with other people, working together as a whole.
- Communication i.e. Mutually exchanging ideas, information.
Every skill itself is important but taking a look at what is most necessary we would say that Creativity is the most necessary among all these. Because it is a means of adaption. This skill helps individuals to figure out concepts in a different way/light which leads to many innovations and new ideas. Innovating new ideas is the only key to a successful business in the long run. And Collaboration thus is then the second most required skill as the students need to get to work together, achieve the best possible results in solving a problem as a team, as a whole. Imagine a full team of creative and innovative ideas sharing their views. It's a billion-dollar business idea.
Finally talking about Communication which is the key that holds all these education qualities together and works as an adhesive. Without proper communication, students might lack in their careers.
2. Literacy Skills
Talking about this next category of 21st Century skills, sometimes they are called IMT skills. This category is further divided into three. They are: -
- Information Literacy: This is a foundation skill which deals in understanding facts, figures, statistics, and data. Students can encounter the facts and interpret data online easily through this skill. Also, it teaches students to separate facts from fiction because many times we face problem in finding the truth about the information provided online. Students may fall prey to the wrong information, myths, and misconceptions mentioned on the World Wide Web. Its students work to identify honest information on their own.
- Media Literacy: Just like the previous skill this skill also helps students to identify the publishing methods and sources and then differentiate between the ones that are plausible and the ones that aren't. Finding saturated information online is really important and then trusting a source for its information is risky because to a student who doesn't know about the topic anything which looks conclusive becomes conclusive. So, giving them knowledge about what to omit and what to grasp is equally important.
- Technology Literacy: Talking about this skill, it is a bit advanced than the above stated two. It teaches students about the machines involved in this generation i.e.the basic information they need to understand what and how gadgets perform. To some, it might not be a surprise but to some technology unmasks itself. Therefore, students give mixed reactions on knowing what a computer does, how mobiles operate, how does google drive work, how does data get stored on the cloud, etc. Students are thus playing an important role in the evolution of technology.
3. Life skills
The final category of 21st-century skills. Also known as FLIPS. They are the skills referring to someone's personal life and also connecting to professional ethics. This category of skill is divided into five skills. They are: -
- Flexibility: The ability to mold your plans or adapt to the change in circumstances. Flexibility for some being the easiest qualities can be challenging for others as it includes a lot of humility and you ought to accept, you're wrong at times. That's a huge problem for students as they never admit their mistake rather, they argue and misbehave. Flexibility is knowing when and how to change and then react accordingly and in the long run, this quality is crucial for your any profession.
- Leadership: Setting the right goals, leading them confidently and achieving those goals is one thing in life everyone wishes for. But all this is a waste if you do not have leadership qualities. You need to lead a team and take them through to achieve the goals collectively. But leadership isn't alone. You also require to take initiative. And it needs to be learnt with time.
- Stay confident, take initiative and start leading some projects. Students with initiative qualities are more often to earn great rewards. With this, we come to the next skill 21st-century students need to learn about. It is called Productivity. A student's ability to deliver or complete a given task in a particular span of time. The other term that can be used for productivity is efficiency. More work done in less time should be the aim of students. This would result in increased productivity of work. This can be done with the help of strategies. Students can easily plan their day out.
- Last skill is Social Skill. As the name suggests, a business cannot be successful if you do not have social connections. A professional need to have a really strong social background to have long-lasting relationships. This is also known as networking. The way you interact with a person decides your relationship. Some students while lack the social skills in the 21st-century, some possess great social skills and are more socially proficient than them. But overall students need to learn and practice social skills.
